Hovsgol Drilling Project was discussed at the last session of
Wednesday. Russian and Mongol research team gave a basic introduction of the
lake Hovsgol and surrounding region. Several topis including sample sharing
and providing principle, the scientific significance, etc. were discussed.
The schedule for coming several months was introduced by Prof. Kawai, Nagoya
University.
20-25 Feb.: preparing of drilling platform on the ice of Lake Hovsgol
25-28 Feb.: Constrain of drilling rig on ice platform
1-30 March: Drilling operations, transformation of drilling cores to the base
of Geochemistry Institute of RAS in Hanh village (North-East coast of Lake Hovsgol)
1-20 April: Disassembling and transportation of drilling rig and drilling equipment
via Mongolian/Russian border to Irkutsk, Russia
1-20 May: Transportation of drilling cores via Mongolian/Russian border to storage
facilities of Geochemistry Institute of RAS, Irkutsk
25 May-15 July: Primary description of drilling cores and sediments subsampling
in Geochemistry Institute of RAS, Irkutsk
Korean research team showed their perspectives
about the HDP.
Project Purpose: Prediction of the East Asian environmental change by investigating
Earth surface, climatic and paleoecological changes through HDP
Representative: KIGAM
Methodology: Isotope (C), Dating (AMS), Pollen, Geochemistry, Organic/Bacteria,
High resolution core analysis, Core description, Logistics.
Japanese research team
showed their vision about scientific
challenges achievable by the HDP.
Higher time resolution
Numerical estimation of climate
Reconstruction of vegetation and phytoplankton community
Physiology and phylogeny of tolerance to environmental stresses
Baikal standard for global environmental changes
Others may be added during the project period?
